How to Order Online

Select Items and Place an Order Online
Selecting products and placing an order at Chesapeake Crab Connection is quick, easy; and above all, completely secure. Follow these helpful steps to complete your online order. If you are merely making a shopping list, you will follow all steps except "Completing Your Online Purchase."

Placing an Item in Your Cart
Once you have found the item you would like to purchase, simply enter in the quantity and click the "Add to Cart" button. This button is located at the bottom of the "Product Detail Page," just to the bottom of the product image. If you do not enter a number in the Quantity box, it defaults to "1".

When you have finished adding items to your Shopping Cart, click the Checkout link (located on the right-hand panel on every page of our site). This begins your checkout process.

Changing Item Quantities
If you wish to buy multiple quantities of an item you have placed in your Shopping Cart, change the number in the "Quantity" box. Please click the "Update" button again for each change you make in the quantity. The quantity does not add the new number to your current total, but instead replaces it. You can view your Shopping Cart at any time during the shopping process by clicking on the "View Cart" link on the right-hand panel.

If you prefer to wait until another day to buy the items in your Shopping Cart, Chesapeake Crab Connection saves those items (using a cookie) and keeps them active for three (3) days. You may continue to add items to your Shopping Cart if you return to the site within three (3) days.

Removing Items From Your Cart
Delete unwanted items from your shopping cart by clicking on the "X" button located on the right side of the item in your shopping cart.

Completing Your Online Purchase when Purchasing Products Online
Secure Online Ordering is enabled by clicking the "Checkout" button. This link will take you into a secured area where Chesapeake Crab Connection will guide you step-by-step through the ordering process to complete your online transaction.

How do I reheat my Maryland Blue Crabs?

The best method to reheating a blue crab is to microwave 6 to 8 crabs for a minute to a minute and a half on a high setting. This method gives the crabs a just steamed taste without drying out the crabs. If you put the crabs in a steamer or oven, you run the risk of drying out the crabs. Other house methods are often used. If steaming, follow these recommended reheating times:

First Step: Set steamer for one (1) minute at a hard steam, and the remaining duration lower to a regular steam.

By the Dozen: Seven (5) minutes regular steam

By the 1/2 Bushel: Seven and a half (7.5) minutes regular steam

By the Bushel: Eight and a half (8.5) minutes regular steam

How do I steam live Maryland Blue Crabs?

After receiving your live blue crabs, place them in a slush ice bath to stun them. This process will prevent them from losing their claws or legs while steaming. After five (5) to ten (10) minutes in an ice bath, place your blue crabs in a steaming pot. Make sure the blue crabs are not in the water but on a platform above the water. Sprinkle the crab seasoning on the blue crabs until you reach your desired amount and place a lid over them. Light your fire under the steaming pot. Once the water starts boiling and reaches a hard steam, start your timer. Below are the recommended times for different quantities of blue crabs.

By the Dozen:

Smalls: 14 minutes

Mediums: 15 minutes

Larges: 15 minutes

Jumbo Legends (Extra Larges): 16 minutes

Super Legends: 16-17 minutes

We provide a year round supply of blue crabs and crab meat. While our signature crabs and crabmeat is always product of the USA we fish many states to abide by fishing seasons and weather. We crab in Maryland, Virginia, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Our crab meat picking houses are location in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana. This ensures we have a bountiful supply of fresh crab meat year round. Our commercial crabbing license for Maryland is fished around the Mill Creek area of Annapolis.

How do I eat Blue Crabs?

Once your blue crabs are steamed and have a bold orange color, place them upside down on the top shell to have the belly up. Find what is known as the tab or flap on the belly of the crab. The tab on a male crab looks like the 'Washington Monument' and the flap on a female is wide and looks like the 'top of the U.S. Capital'.

  1. Pry this tab or flap up with the point of a knife then tear it off and discard it.

  2. Using your thumbs, separate the top and bottom of the shell. The bottom part contains the entire body of the crab which will be picked in the following steps. The top half of the shell will contain nothing except a small amount of yellow substance; which, believe it or not, is edible and referred to by many as the mustard or the tomalley.

  3. Next, remove the lungs with are sometimes called the devil's fingers. Remove them by pinching them between your thumb and the side of your knife using a scraping pulling motion. Remove and discard the lungs from the left and right side of the crab. Do not eat the lungs of the blue crab.

  4. Grip the crab so that you have one side of the crab in each hand; bend each side down or up until it is broken into two halves also called 'clusters'.

  5. Now that you have two clusters with each consisting of a claw, three legs, and a back fin; you are very close to finally picking the much anticipated meat. First, locate the back fin which is the small swim fin located opposite the claw on either one of your two clusters. Using your thumb and index finger, squeeze the back fin lightly just above the joint to the inside of the body. Then, gently pull with a very easy twisting motion, removing the most desired meat on the crab that should still be connected to the back fin which still may have a little bit of the thin white shell still surrounding the meat. This shell can easily be removed revealing the white fluffy meat.

  6. Now, take the remaining part of the cluster which is now minus the back fin and squeeze the inner part of the crab shell; not crushing it, rather, just cracking it enough to allow the meat to separate.  This procedure enables the shell enough leverage to slide out in the next step. This cracking the crab is a skill that takes practice over time due to the fact that every crab shell is of different hardness, depending on the crab's individual stage in the molting process.

  7. Once the body of the crab has been cracked and squeezed; you can now take your knife and between the squeezed parts, cut down the centers of each chamber, just down to where the legs fasten to the body. Now, since we did not remove the legs yet; but did however, loosen up the innards, also known as the meat of the crab.  Obtain this meat by squeezing and making a little slit with the knife. Pull the legs out gently, and if lucky; all the meat will be hanging from the base of the leg. If you are not so lucky, just pick the meat out with the point of your knife. Even with practice the meat will not always come out perfectly attached to the leg.

  8. After getting the biggest, easiest pieces out of the body, as in Step 7, use the point of your knife and fingers to separate the rest of the thin white shell cavities that make up the inside of the crab. This step is the most time consuming and unrewarding part of your picking experience in that the pieces of meat get smaller and are more difficult to remove. However, there is plenty of meat remaining to be worth your while.

  9. Finally: The chance to eat the much awaited claw meat! To get to the claw meat, hold straight, with the joint extended and  bending it back opposite to the way the joint naturally bends. Then, with a mallet or the handle of a knife, strike the center of the claw. This requires the most skill and practice to master because you want to only crack the shell 1/4 of the way through, just enough to remove the shell from the large fluffy meat without pulverizing the shell into the meat. Once the large fluffy chunk of meat is revealed, pinch the cartilage at the widest side of the meat carefully, not to bite off the cartilage while pulling it out leaving the piece of claw meat in your mouth to enjoy!

  10. Lastly, the remaining six legs of the Maryland Blue Crab have very little meat and are often discarded while there are other people who will ask for any leg that may have broken off in the pot during steaming so they can savor each little morsel. If this is you, then simply focus on the thickest part of the leg between the joint that was fastened to the body and the next knuckle. Move toward the tip of the leg, snap and remove that knuckle and the small remaining segment.  In your hand will be the remaining, largest segment of the leg. Snap the joint side that would have connected to the body and slide out tapered sliver of meat and consume.

Soon you will be eating "The treasure of the Chesapeake" like a pro. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Please note: in the winter months, blue crabs may taste saltier. We recommend if you are sensitive to the salt that you order your crabs with light spice. Please note, the extra salt taste does not affect the ability to eat the crabs.
